Women in History

Description of Lesson: Students read and discuss an overview of the Trail of Tears; posit questions about what the Cherokee people might have done to prevent the eventual outcome of removal; specifically focus on the women of the Cherokee Nation and their characteristic roles in the culture, historically and current to the time of the Removal; read the Cherokee Women's Petition, in whole or in part, as time and fluency allows, and discuss their responses; analyze and relate the actions of the women to modern turmoil in regions of the world.
How to Analyze Primary Resources

Description of Lesson: The teacher will give an introduction to two primary sources, which are accounts by Portuguese travelers to Africa in the 16th century. The teacher will then describe for students the differences between what constitutes a primary and secondary source while giving a variety of examples to help explain the main differences. Examples of primary sources will include posters, maps, cartoons, newspapers, films, and journals. Examples of secondary sources will include textbooks, biographies, and articles or books on past events. Then the teacher will outline 7 main questions for students to answer when critically examining primary sources.
Wilmington Scavenger Hunt

Description of Lesson: Students will go on a scavenger hunt around downtown Wilmington to discover important landmarks and interact at various locations through writing, speaking, acting, singing, listening, etc. Each student will have a role as they photograph and/or video tape their interactions.
North Carolina lighthouses

Description of Lesson: Students will be introduced to the various lighthouses that are located along our state's coastline. They will be expected to learn select facts about each of the 8 lighthouses, their location and the unique geographic features of our state's coastal region that lead to their construction.
Interesting Architecture and Ghosts of Historic Wilmington

Description of Lesson: By touring 3 historic buildings in Wilmington students will learn details about their construction, the time period they were built and to stimulate their interest, the ghosts that supposedly lurk within the structures. Would work great for a comfortable day in October.
Transportation Evolution and
George Vanderbilt's Move to Western N.C.

Description of Lesson: Students will be educated on the progression of transportation during the 19th century and how it would lead George Vanderbilt to eventually arrive in Asheville where he would leave an economic and environmental legacy.
