Women, Stamps, and the Civil War

Description of Lesson: Students will investigate the different roles of women in the Civil War. Students will make a commemorative stamp honoring their chosen woman. Students should investigate what happened  to postage stamps during the Civil War and recognize how the division of North and South affected everyday people.



 

Enemies of Slavery

Description of Lessson Plan: After learning about the the civil war and reconstruction, students will choose an “enemy of slavery” to research and present to the class. For the presentation students will develop a monologue to present to the class as their historical enemy of slavery figure. They will dress as that person and bring in props that enhance the viewers understanding of the role his/her figure played in history.  They will also complete a character reflection and participate in a peer review during presentations.



 

A Day in the Life of a Slave

Description of Lesson: Students will explore the history of slavery as well as look at the daily life of a slave.  This lesson will integrate the use of technology.

Runaway Slaves and Wilmington, N.C.

Description of Lesson: Students will begin by hearing a realistic fiction story of a runaway slave. Students will use skills to infer who the character is and what he is doing.  After hearing this story we will connect to the real life story of William Gould and his Orange Street Landing escape in Wilmington.

Slavery Jigsaw with Primary Documents

Description of Lesson: Students will teach each other about slave life in America. They will research with a group on a specific aspect of slave life (family, living conditions, education, religion, men women and gender). They will be using primary sources to find their information. After the group has gathered their information, students will go back to their original groups and share. Creative expression will be used to culminate the learning.
